perfect housekeeping style

A Quick-Change Chain
The latest necklace–the lariat–is also a belt and a bracelet. It’s turning up in silver or gold with or without charms, beads, and tassels. Choose one that’s about 32 inches long with a hook or clasp on the end, and you’ll get day-to-night versatility. How to wear it:
Tie at the neck, cowboy-style, leaving ends hanging free, above.

Belt over a sweater, left, shirt, I or straight dress, or through trouser belt loops.
Wrap twice around neck for a dramatic choker.
Wind around wrist for a bracelet; great with a little black dress. Shown: silver-plate lariat with heart charms from Agatha, $57.
If you’re under 5’4″ and need to hide a few pounds, try these camouflage tactics:
  1. Go for jackets with hems that hit at the hipbone or higher, and straight-leg pants. Both will help elongate legs. “You’ll be perceived as taller and thinner,” says Mary Duffy, executive director of special sizes at Ford Models in New York City.
  2. If you’re top-heavy, try a tunic or roomy blouse over a narrow (preferably short) skirt.
  3. Pear-shaped, with rounded hips and thighs? Stick to A-line dresses that show a little bit of leg.
Also look for collections tailored for large petites–the clothes are cut to flatter your share. Our fashion director’s picks: Elisabeth by Liz Claiborne (800-555-9838), Maggie McNaughton (212-719-9039), Ulla Popken (800-245-8552), and For You from Spiegel (800-345-4500).
